Hot Sauce

This is one of the most used products by the men on plan. There are many commercially available products out there, but most are loaded with sodium. I thought it might be fun to try making our own. The interesting part is the amount of control that we have when making hot sauce. We can make all heat levels from mild to the hottest of the hot. Also, by choosing which type of peppers we use, we can control the flavor. Garlic and other spices can be added as well. In this recipe, I started with half a cup of jalapeños and half a cup of red bell pepper. I seeded and removed the ribs from 2 of the 3 jalapeños that I used to keep the heat level down. I would put the heat level somewhere between mild and medium. Experiment with different peppers and let me know your results!

Yields1 Serving
Prep Time15 minsCook Time10 minsTotal Time25 mins
 ½ cup White vinegar
 1 cup Water
 1 tsp Morton’s Lite Salt
½ cup Jalapeños ½ cup (Use whichever peppers you like. Remember, most of the heat is in the seeds and ribs. Removing some or all of them will make your hot sauce much milder.)
½ cup Red bell pepper(I used this for sweetness and color, but it is not necessary.)
1

Bring water, vinegar, and salt to a boil.

2

Lower to a light simmer

3

Prepare your peppers as you like. (Removing the seeds and the ribs if desired) Chop your peppers into small pieces. (The size is not that important as we will be blending the mixture anyway).

4

Add peppers and any other spices you want to use to the simmering vinegar and let it cook for at least 10 minutes.

5

Turn off the heat after 10 minutes and allow mixture to cool for about an hour.

6

Using either a bar blender or an immersion blender, blend the mixture until fairly smooth.

7

You can strain the mixture or use it the way it is.

Serving size is 1 tablespoon per day.
